Some weeks, I keep having a specific theme come up, and this was one of those weeks. I’ve had a lot of conversations this week about the secret to increasing your income. Honestly, it is no secret… and I love to share it with anyone that will listen. Because this was the recurring theme this week, I am going to share the secret with all of you! Be sure to check out the challenge below that can change your life and your business for the better! Thank you for reading!
How Do I Get More Income?
Do you think you are worth more than you are paid? Most of us think that, and most of us are 100% right! That doesn’t mean you can walk into your boss’s office today and demand more money. It simply doesn’t work that way. Maybe you can get a job offer for more money from a competitor and use that as leverage for more money, but short of that you probably can’t demand a significant increase in pay.
In every industry, and in every profession, there are people or businesses that are raking in the money, and others that are struggling to make ends meet. You can find two businesses selling similar products in the same location to the same market and one is thriving, while the other is barely surviving. You can have two individuals with similar education and experience and one is thriving, when the other is barely surviving. Is one business owner luckier than the other? No. Is one individual luckier than the other? No. There is a natural law of compensation that dictates your level of income. Follow the law, and your income will continue to increase.
Is There a Need for What You Do?
The first aspect of the law of compensation is determine if there is a need for what you do. Remember standing in line to check out at Blockbuster stores? Today, you can open the biggest, best video rental store and you will not make money? Why? With technology today, nobody needs to rent movies.
I’ve seen people who spent a career trying to get really good at one task or service. Eventually they find that that task or service is no longer needed, then they struggle to find work or produce an income. To earn an income, you have to provide a good or service that is needed. People will only give you money if they want or need what you are selling.
How Well Do You Do It?
Assuming you are providing a good or service that people need, how well do you provide that service? Are you the best, or are you average? If you are average, you’ll receive average compensation. If you are the best you’ll receive a significantly higher compensation. Think about this, the top 1% of income earners earn more than 96% of the wealth. Is this the result of coincidence or a rigged system? No. These people fill a need and are really good at what they do. Here is the best part… it doesn’t take that much more effort to go from average to exceptional. Just a few hours a week of extra effort. Study when everyone else is watching TV. Get up early and be productive. Top performance is so elusive because most people aren’t willing to do what it takes to be the best.
Here’s a case in point… I listened to a LinkedIn training from Kait LeDonneon on using LinkedIn to attract clients. The formula was really simple. Use LinkedIn to publish meaningful content for 30 days. Then the algorithms will see that you are active, and post quality, and you’ll be recommended to others. She finished that sentence by saying “most of you won’t do it”. She even gave us a foolproof way to come up with thirty days of material to publish. However, for most people, committing 30 minutes a day for 30 days to improve their client base is much to ask. Wow!
How Easily Can You be Replaced?
If you closed your business, or quit your job, how easily could you be replaced? I used to think that if I filled a need and I was good at my job, it would be hard to replace me. But, there’s a lot more to it than that. I’ve been in companies where someone left for some reason, and it took two or three people to do the work that person was doing. I’ve also observed someone leaving a job and nobody even goes through the effort of replacing that person. Clearly, when it takes two or three people to replace someone, that person was much more valuable. Which person are you?
Just the other day there was some road work being done outside my home. They had one lane blocked off and a flag person at each end holding a sign to control traffic. Is there a need for what they do? Yes, for public safety reasons someone had to make sure we didn’t have two cars going opposite directions on one lane. Were they good at what they do? Yes, they controlled traffic just fine and there were no incidents. How easily could they be replaced? Pretty easily.
