What a week, and I don’t necessarily mean that in a good way. From first thing Monday morning when I heard about that tragic incident in Las Vegas, every time I turned on any news it was full of tragedy. Many who know me understand that I don’t like to dwell on the negative. There was so much of it this week, and it was so hard to escape. It’s moments like this when we all have to take stock in what we have, and take time to be grateful for everything good in our lives. There are always things you can’t control, but your attitude is something you can control. This week I am going to remind everyone of the power of gratitude, and recommend everyone take a moment to feel grateful for what they have. It’ll help you feel better and will improve your results! Thank you for reading!
Attitude of Gratitude
The feeling of being grateful is one of the most powerful emotions we have. Think about a time when someone did something nice for you, maybe something unexpected. Perhaps someone cooked your favorite meal, or sent you a card for no reason. You probably felt good, appreciated, and grateful for receiving such a gift, and the thought behind it. What happens when you feel grateful? Simply put, you feel good. You’re happy, and you smile. And you’re more likely to do something nice for someone else. Now put yourself on the other side of that situation. Think of a time when you did something nice for someone else and they showed gratitude. How did that make you feel? I bet you felt good. You were happy and you smiled. And because you felt good, you’re probably more likely to do something nice again. In this way, an attitude of gratitude is contagious!
Take Time Out for Gratitude
In this busy, busy world, where we are always moving, and want instant results, it’s difficult to remind ourselves to take time to be grateful. Last week I was at a lunch networking event. During this event we have a topic we discuss as a group, typically something to help us grow ourselves or our business. Last week it was about finding what makes us happy. The idea is when we get stressed, frustrated, or overwhelmed, we can use this as a tool to get back on track. We can think of what makes us happy and get back in a positive frame of mind.
This is basically another form of gratitude. Many people mentioned that they liked the water. Sitting on a beach or near a lake and looking out upon the water. The action of thinking about that to bring happiness is really working with an attitude of gratitude. These people probably liked the water because it brings back a fond memory, perhaps going to the beach with the family as a kid, or a vacation with a loved one.
Focus Your Gratitude
AWhen you focus your energy on what you are grateful for, or whatever it is that makes you happy, you bring more of that into your life. Many people refer to this as the law of attraction, but this goes deeper than that. When you focus on something, you create behaviors and actions designed to bring more of that into your life. Here is a real simple example… I am grateful for pizza. Seriously, I love pizza. Because I love pizza I am able to find a way to bring pizza into my life at least once a week. I am grateful for my friendships. Despite busy lives for me and my friends we still find time to get together occasionally for wings, or some golf, and if we’re lucky… both!
The Challenge
Take time this week to find something you are grateful for, or something that makes you happy. Spend time daily thinking and focusing on whatever that is, and bring more of that into your life.
